What Are The Benefits of a Green Home?

Tuesday, October 19th, 2010

energy efficient homesThe Green Building movement is a major change to the way new homes are built. If you are actively searching for a green home in Roanoke or Richmond, here are some things to keep in mind.

The scientific research that has been done in the housing industry as part of the Green Building movement has identified the areas in homes where there are problems. In traditionally built homes as much as 20% of the home’s heating and cooling are leaking outside, resulting in wasted money and wasted resources.  This research has led to the development of guidelines that we call “Scientifically Designed Homes” or “Green homes” the terms are used interchangeably.  Today’s new homes are going to be built better because of this research.

Green Home Benefits to the Buyers?

First, the Quality of Construction is Superior to traditional building methods. The criteria of “Scientifically Designed” homes addresses minimizing energy loss, installing a vapor barrier that keeps the moisture outside and does not allow it into the structure, this is to prevent (more…)

What Does Green Building Mean?

Sunday, October 17th, 2010

You probably already know that Green Building saves you money on energy bills, but did you know that there are many health benefits to living in a green home? It seems we have been bombarded by the media with the term “Green Building,” but few of us know what it actually means. We are going to explore the meaning of green building, as well as the benefits to homebuyers of living in green homes in a series of posts on our blog. When you start your search for an energy efficient home in Richmond or Roanoke, we hope you’ll call us!

We thought it would be helpful to define “Green Building” and decided to turn to a recognized authority on the subject. Here is the definition from the EPA’s Energy Star® Website:

“Green building means improving the way homes and homebuilding sites use energy, water, and materials to reduce impacts on human health and the environment. Building a green home means making environmentally-preferable and sustainable decisions throughout the building process – decisions that will minimize the environmental impact of the home while it is being built and over the many years it will be lived in.”
EPA Energy Star states that there are 50 regional and national green home labeling programs around the country. They identify the guiding principles of each program as follows:

  • Energy-efficient construction techniques and products
  • Improved indoor environments through environmentally-preferable material and building practices
  • Water-efficient products and processes
  • Renewable energy options, when feasible (more…)

The Education of Living in Virginia

Friday, July 30th, 2010

You may have read in one of our other blogs about the great school systems in Virginia, but did you know that living in Virginia is an education in itself.  Where else are you going to see so much living history, and so many places of the past preserved.  Just a short drive from Richmond will take you to Colonial Williamsburg where the past comes alive every day with recreations from the revolutionary war period, street theater, and stories of the everyday life of the residents of 18th century Williamsburg.

However, if the revolutionary war is not your favorite time period, perhaps a drive to Appomattox, Virginia, is the thing for you. Take in the sights and sounds of the place where Lee surrendered to Grant and ended the Civil War.  But if you don’t want to take a road trip, you can easily get all the education about the Civil War you desire right here in Richmond, Virginia,  from the Museum of the Confederacy to the Petersburg battlefields, and so much more.  There are countless historical places to visit in Virginia no matter which period of history interests you.  It is truly a history lovers dream to live here.

How would you like to come home from your day’s historical adventures to your own beautiful library & study– one that would make Jefferson or Washington envious?  You can certainly do that if you own a home built by Boone Homes. We can custom build any of our luxury home plans to help you have the study of your dreams.  Why (more…)

Which is worse cooking or washing dishes?  I am sure we will get a variety of answers on that one.  I don’t really care for either one myself, but let’s face it, whether we like it or not, they are both things that have to be done.  So why not make it as easy on yourself as possible ?  With the advanced technology and spaciousness of your new kitchen in your Boone Home, both of  those chores will be done more easily and quickly than ever before.

Are you tired of pre-washing dishes before you put them in the dishwasher?  With the advanced technology of  many of today’s dishwashers there is no more pre-washing because you can choose a dishwasher with a built in hard food disposer. There are  many new options available to make washing dishes easier than ever before.  You can choose a dishwasher with technology like adjustable rack levels, delay timer for washing,  deep clean cycles, and even single rack wash selection.  I personally like the delay wash cycle and single rack selection.  With these two options (more…)

Roanoke Welcomes a New Medical School

Wednesday, June 16th, 2010

This is a historical year for Roanoke, Virgina.  The new Virginia Tech Carillion School of Medicine (VTC) opens its doors with the first classes beginning this fall.  How exciting to be a part of this adventure from the beginning, and watch as a  new generation of doctors grow and learn.  What’s more exciting is this school is different from other medical schools.  It is a unique, public-private partnership between one of America’s top research universities and a major healthcare institution. VTC School of Medicine will educate physicians through inquiry, research and discovery. It will have a cutting-edge curriculum called Patient Centered Learning.  Only 15 percent of medical schools across the country employ a PCL curriculum. In addition VTC will offer research as a key component of the curriculum, and only 5 percent of schools nationwide are currently offering that.  Boone Homes is proud to welcome VTC students, faculty and staff to the Roanoke valley.

We, at Boone Homes, pride ourselves on being on the cutting edge offering the latest trends in the home-buying market.  We are one of the few home builders (more…)
