Richmond’s Newest Treasures at The VMFA

The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts has expanded and nearly doubled in size!  Museum director, Alex Nyerges says “Everything about it is bigger, brighter and — with free admission– more welcoming. “  The expanded museum has double the space for traveling exhibitions, and the new renovations have expanses of glass that allow more natural light into the museum.

The McGlothlin Wing is the primary feature in the museum’s expansion. The first major exhibit in the new wing is called Tiffany: Color and Light. The exhibition is a collection of work by renowned designer and master of glass, Louis Comfort Tiffany. Curated by the world’s leading scholars, the exhibition centers on his primary work.  Among the more than 180 objects in the exhibit are examples of his leaded (more…)

Glass in the Garden

If you are new to the Richmond area, perhaps you are not familiar with Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden. If so then now might be the perfect time to visit during the annual “A Million Blooms” spring flower display. This year you can also see the Glorious “Glass in the Garden” mixed in around all of the flowers and trees in the garden. There are more than 100 pieces in this equisite exhibit by renowned glass artist Hans Godo Frabel. This is the debute for the exhibit in the mid-Atlantic region, and it will include three major new pieces. Some of the pieces are large, like the 900-pound  clear glass cubes in the upper gardens; and some are small, like the tiniest glass frogs, lizards and flowers in all the other areas of the garden. Glorious Glass in the Garden: The Art of Hans Godo Fräbel at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden runs April 1, 2010 – Jan. 10, 2011. It will also be a part of GardenFest of Lights.
